Write a Letter of Support

The San Juan Islands National Conservation Area legislation was developed in the local community; organized by Representative Larsen’s office with input from tribes, BLM, and other stakeholders; and introduced into Congress in September by Representative Larsen and Senator Cantwell.

As all of us are aware, the current Congress is not functioning efficiently.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has offered to propose to the President that these lands achieve their Conservation Lands designation via a presidential proclamation rather than wait for the uncertain legislative process. Our goal of permanent protection for the BLM lands in the San Juan islands with a strong community voice in their management could be achieved via a presidential proclamation if that proclamation was based on the legislation Senator Cantwell and Representative Larsen have drafted on behalf of the community.

Support at the Local Level

The San Juan County Council voted on April 3rd to support a presidential proclamation as a method of permanently protecting the BLM lands in the San Juan Islands. Please thank your council members for their support of this second path to protect these lands.

Support at the National Level

We Still Need Your Help

We look forward to working with Senator Cantwell, Representative Larsen and Secretary Salazar to pursue both the congressional and presidential paths to protection. We encourage the community to join us in endorsing this dual-track approach to achieving the goals of a San Juan Island National Conservation Area. Your voices of support are what enabled us to reach this point and that continued call for action can help us gain the protection these lands need.

Representative Rick Larsen and Senator Maria Cantwell are our lead sponsors in Congress. Your letter of support will help them advocate on our behalf and ensure passage of the legislation. Likewise, support sent to Secretary Salazar will help demonstrate to the administration that the community is behind a presidential proclamation.

Tips

  • Include a few sentences about why these lands are important to you - your letter will have more impact.

RE: BLM Lands in the San Juan Islands

Dear Secretary Salazar:

We want to thank you for your support of our community's strong desire for permanent protection for the BLM lands in the San Juan Islands.

As you know, we are pursuing this course of action directly through Representative Larsen and Senator Cantwell who have drafted and introduced legislation on behalf of the community that would designate these lands as Conservation Lands within BLM.

The proposed legislation provides for permanent protection of the BLM lands in the San Juans with a strong community voice in their management, keeping these lands natural and available to future generations.

We appreciate and applaud your offer to propose to the President that these lands achieve their Conservation Lands designation via a presidential proclamation rather than wait for the uncertain legislative process.

We believe that appropriate protection for the BLM lands in the San Juans could be achieved via a presidential proclamation if that proclamation was based on the legislation Senator Cantwell and Representative Larsen have drafted on behalf of the community.

[Please include a few sentences on you or your organization, what you value in the BLM lands in the San Juans, why they should be permanently protected, how you use those lands and/or how you would like to see these properties managed.]

We look forward to working with you, Senator Cantwell, and Representative Larsen to pursue both the congressional and presidential paths. Whether via legislation as a National Conservation Area or via a presidential proclamation as a National Monument, our goal remains the same - to pursue a Conservation Lands designation that provides permanent protection for the BLM lands of the San Juan Islands and a strong community voice in their management.

Thank you very much for your efforts on our behalf.
Sincerely yours,
